Artist Bio
Robert Greene Sands is a mixed-media artist, writer, and anthropologist whose work draws from a lifetime of observing and engaging with the human and natural world. His practice is informed by his academic background in anthropology and lived experience as a surfer, runner, hiker, and designer of wellness gardens. These personal and professional paths converge in works that reflect the physicality of landscape and the emotional textures of connection.
In addition to his painting on canvas, Sands also works primarily with reclaimed and recycled wood, materials chosen not only for their character and history, but for their echo of nature’s own regenerative processes. Just as organic elements in the environment are broken down and reborn, his art gives new form to what has been weathered, discarded, or forgotten. Based in Alexandria, Virginia, Sands exhibits regionally and creates both public and private works that speak to a grounded, lived relationship with the natural world.
As Executive Director of the non-profit Pamlico Rose Institute and its nature-based wellness approach, Sands has designed/co-designed large wellness gardens in North Carolina. He has created, and with PRI launched, an online learning platform, Pamlico Rose Academy, including EdenBloom, a nature-based wellness education program. He has also co-authored the book On Herbs with members of the AmeriCorps team supporting Pamlico Rose, and did the original artwork for the book.
Sands has also written several books on sport, culture, identity and human performance.
His debut novel, Chasing Gazelle, is out this summer. You can learn more about that creative avenue at www.robertgreenesands.com.
Robert Greene Sands continues to create across different media at his Cedar Knoll studio in northern Virginia.
